In pictures: Battling Europe's floods
Towns in northern Germany are on high alert as the record flood waters - which have wrought devastation across Central Europe - continue to surge towards the North Sea.
Mountains of sandbags appear to have saved Magdeburg from the swollen Elbe River
But more continue to be stacked up as the Elbe surges northwards towards Hamburg
As the waters are receding in the Czech Republic, officials warn of the spread of disease in the affected areas
...and there are growing fears that dangerous toxins may be seeping from a submerged Czech chemical plant
Many residents have also been told not to return home as danger of collapsing buildings remains
In Hungary, flood defences spared the capital, but even there, the waters could not be held back completely
...and people had to adapt to the force of nature
...but life was slowly returning to normal as Dresden's famous Albertinum museum has again opened its doors
