Military implicated in Timor atrocities
By East Asia reporter Clare Arthurs Investigators from the Indonesian human rights commission have said the country must be prepared to hold some of its top military officials accountable for atrocities in East Timor.
Mr Lubis said the commission intended to subpoena some of the military's top officials, including the former military chief, General Wiranto - now a cabinet minister. But there is growing concern about whether any trials will go ahead. They would face several obstacles, not least military opposition to public civil hearings. Go to the top Mr Lubis plans to take his concerns to President Abdurrahman Wahid this week. "We would like to inform him that the allegations about military personnel involvement in all these human rights abuses might lead to questioning a number of high ranking military officers," he said. "We would like to have his assurance that the investigation can be conducted without any restrictions." Mr Lubis argues that it is far better for Indonesia to handle its affairs than to leave them to the United Nations, which this week begins its own inquiry into allegations of human rights abuses in East Timor. But as well as prosecutions, the commission has been discussing the benefits of following South Africa's example and setting up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission on East Timor. |
