In pictures: Australia's new year inferno
With more hot weather predicted and no sign of rain, the battle to save hundreds of Australian homes from raging bush fires continues.
![]() The fires are still showing no signs of abating
![]() Already 160 houses have been destroyed
![]() The smoke can even be seen across the Tasman Sea in New Zealand
![]() And smoke high in the atmosphere has made the moon glow blood red over Auckland
![]() Exhausted fire-fighters have been working round the clock
![]() They have been joined by local residents, desperate to save their homes
![]() An area of bush twice the size of Greater London has been destroyed
![]() Children are forced to cover up whilst outside
![]() People made to evacuate their homes have been certain to take their pets with them
![]() But many wild animals have not been so lucky
