Barack Obama has described the situation surrounding Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich as "an appalling set of circumstances".
Politicians from both sides of the divide are calling for impeachment proceedings to begin against Mr Blagojevich following allegations that he tried to profit from his power to choose a replacement for President-elect Obama, who has withdrawn from the Senate after winning the presidential election.
