In pictures: Venezuela on strike
An ongoing general strike against Venezuela's leftist president is bringing the oil-rich state's economy to a halt but Hugo Chavez shows no sign of meeting opposition demands.
Oil tankers have dropped anchor since their crews joined the strike which began on Monday.
President Chavez has pledged to use the army to keep the oil industry working.
Troops are out on force to obey the orders of their ex-paratrooper president.
Opposition supporters have taken to the streets to demand the removal of the Chavez government.
Shops have been under pressure to support the strike which has the support of many business people.
Tension surged on Tuesday as the security forces used tear gas against protesters.
Troops have set up their own markets, complete with army salsa bands, to keep supplies circulating during the strike.
