A new 10 screen cinema, restaurants and casino are to be built as part of the second phase of the Wind Street cafe quarter.

It is the latest development in Swansea's bid to become a top waterfront city, first unveiled in April.

The first phase of the Wind Street development, known as Salubrious Place, is already under way and with plans for a hotel, car park and restaurants.

The development will provide a modern link with the historic Maritime Quarter - giving the city its second casino and its largest multiplex cinema with 1,650 seats.

A 116-bedroom hotel, car park and restaurants will also be included in the complex which is due to open in 2005.

Work on Salubrious Place is already ahead of schedule

Swansea Council working with the Welsh Development Agency, have chosen the same developers who are carrying out the project's first phase in Wind Street which is ahead of schedule.

Council leader Lawrence Bailey said: "We are delighted at the progress of the first phase and now that it can be seen to be taking shape we are looking forward to the opening later next year.

"The second phase clearly demonstrates the new confidence investors have in Swansea."

Around £50m being invested in improving several key sites in the city centre.

High Street Station and the nearby Grand Hotel, the marina, the Quadrant Bus Station and both banks of the River Tawe are all being redeveloped.

Executive director of the WDA, Mike King, said: "This is another example of the transformation that is revitalising the city centre.

"It is a clear vote of confidence in Swansea and indeed in south west Wales as a whole."
