Swansea stages Proms in Park
The concert will be held at Singleton Park

Swansea is one of just four cities across the UK to be chosen to stage the live finale of the BBC Proms.

A spectacular outdoor concert will be held in the city's Singleton Park on 13 September.

It joins Glasgow, Belfast and London in hosting concerts on the last day of the two-month-long BBC music festival.

Residents are being urged to bring along picnics and relax in front of a purpose built stage that will feature top quality performers.

Taking part in the evening will be the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Peter Stark, tenor Robert Tear and Catrin Finch who is harpist to Prince Charles.

Swansea's own Steve Balsamo, who shot to fame playing the lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End, will also perform.

BBC Proms in the Park is part of the Last Night of the Proms celebration and each Proms in the Parks venue will be filmed by BBC TV during the concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Flags and banners

It will be the second time the city has hosted the event.

Like in 1999, more than 10,000 spectators will be encouraged to bring flags, banners and picnics in the true Proms tradition.

All the Parks will have a giant video screen enabling them to link up with each other and the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Swansea Council's cabinet member for culture and recreation, Robert Francis Davies, said it was an honour for the city.

"Proms in the Park will be a fantastic occasion in Swansea," he said.

"We will play our full part in the nationwide spectacle to make this a Proms to remember.

National identity

"It is great news for the city and music lovers who can help create a unique atmosphere in the picturesque surroundings of Singleton Park."

The programme includes many concert favourites, performances from the solo artists and also audience participation.

At the end of the night all the Parks will link up with the Royal Albert Hall to sing the traditional Proms anthems Rule Britannia and Jerusalem.

Each Park will have their own section in the piece which will take the form of a traditional folk song representing their national identity.

The evening will finish with the National Anthem and a fireworks display.

Tickets are available via the council's ticket service at the Grand Theatre.
