Ian Gunning joined the police after being a steelworker
A north Wales policeman who raised thousands of pounds for local childrens' charities has been awarded an MBE in the Queen's birthday honours.

Dc Ian Gunning, 48, from Rhyl, said he was shocked by the award.

He joined the force in 1980 after working at the Shotton steelworks in Flintshire.

"It's a great honour, especially when your own organisation nominates you," he said.

I take this as an award for the people I've worked with during the years

"I have been involved with working for and on behalf of young people over 23 years and started in Colwyn Bay before moving on to other areas of north Wales mainly Denbighshire.

"I helped raise over £120,000 for Children In Need when I organised an event in Bodelwyddan."

Mr Gunning, originally from Buckley, joined Shotton steelworks straight from school. But he was unfulfilled by the job and applied to North Wales Police.

The child protection officer thoroughly enjoys his career.

Delighted

"I enjoy working with young people," he said.

"I have helped set up the Abergele Youth Action Group with local partners which aims to give young people in the town more to do."

Dc Gunning, a father-of three, said his family were "over the moon", and is awaiting the response from his colleagues.

"Apart from a bit of ribbing I hope they'll be pleased."

He added: "I take this as an award for the people I've worked with during the years."
