WJEC condemns leaking of documents
WJEC sign
The WJEC is unhappy with documents being made public
A call for an emergency statement on the position of the Welsh examination board has been rejected in the National Assembly.

Plaid Cymru and the Conservatives urged Assembly education minister Jane Davidson to discuss the leaking of documents about the organisation by deputy first minister and former WJEC employee Mike German.

It was claimed the documents cast doubt over the legal status of the exam board.

Plaid AM Cynog Dafis urged Ms Davidson to clarify the issue in the assembly chamber on Tuesday.

But business manager Andrew Davies refused calls for a full debate.

Mr Davies said that because the WJEC was a private company, the assembly could not intervene.

However, he added that he would take more advice from colleagues on the matter.

In a statement before the assembly met, Mr Dafis said the WJEC's position was an important matter for AMs.

"Plaid Cymru has known for a long time about the problems in the WJEC and the Assembly must now intervene to secure its future", he said.

"Any move now to bring the WJEC under the aegis of the WLGA would compound the present problems facing the organisation and endanger the body's role as a service provider for education in Wales."
