The future of Welsh athletics has been secured by a five-year sponsorship package worth about £300,000.

The Athletics Association of Wales, due to lose its headquarters with the demolition of the Morfa Stadium this summer, has been handed a new office and £25,000 per year grant by the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.

And the contribution has been doubled by the largest award ever made by the Sports Council for Wales' Sportsmatch sponsorship incentive scheme.

Terry Matthews, Chairman of the Celtic Manor Resort hopes his financial backing will safeguard its future and create the champions of tomorrow.

"We have to look after the guys coming through," he said.

"These guys are the next generation, they are the future, we must invest in the future."

UK Athletics Chief Executive David Moorcroft said: "The Celtic Manor Resort has offered the kind of support that can make a real difference.

"Having visited the resort I am aware of its excellent location and facilities offered.

"I am sure it will be a successful partnership and will help continue the outstanding success that athletics in Wales has achieved in recent years."
