A former Inland Revenue official has left £1m in his will to help preserve and promote the Welsh language.

William Park-Jones, from Caernarfon, north Wales, died last March aged 76.

He was a keen visitor to the National Eisteddfod, and his money may be used to fund competition prizes.

The exact details of how the money will be distributed have not been finalised, and a trust fund has been set up to organise the bequest.

Solicitor Dewi Pritchard Jones said he was trying to register the will as a charity.

"Then I'll have to deal with the Inland Revenue because we don't want to pay any inheritance tax," he said.

He has written to the trustees. "After I have heard from them, I'll have to organise a meeting where they will decide how the fund will be administered."

Elfed Roberts, director of the National Eisteddfod, said: "The money is being given to organisations which promote the language and there are conditions attached to it.

However, he said he was not expecting to be given the cash as "manna from heaven".

"If the money comes to the National Eisteddfod, I am sure we will receive it with thanks, but before then there is no point in prophesying."
