Two other party leaders also gave signed bottles of parliamentary tipple - Liberal Democrats' Charles Kennedy supplied whisky, while Conservative Michael Howard donated a bottle of port.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan's coffee table special - Landscape Wales / Tirwedd Cymru - a collection of aerial photographs of Wales, was snapped up by Glyn Davies.

Handing over the book, the first minister said: "If I'd known it was you buying it I'd have doubled the price."

Sadly there was no 'tick here if you dont' want any publicity' box for Mr Davies who urged: "Don't say anything about this, it's a Christmas present for my wife."

Among the rest of the booty was Plaid Cymru party President Dafydd Iwan's signed copy of one of his videos and Welsh assembly group leader Ieuan Wyn Jones' assembly chocolates.

The auction was one of many Children in Need events, including Labour MP Kevin Brennan and his band, the Popeye Dolls, getting together for a lunchtime busk to raise money for the annual charity extravaganza.

The biggest concert ever was also staged by BBC Wales for the appeal.

A family audience of up to 5,000 in Merthyr Tydfil were treated to live performances from a line-up that will include Bryn Terfel, The Pretenders, Louise, Lisa Maffia, the Fast Food Rockers and James Fox.

BBC Wales said the event - which will be known as Pudsey in the Park - is the largest live concert ever to be staged in the south Wales valleys.

Kevin Brennan MP busked in Cardiff to raise money

The concert - presented by BBC Wales in conjunction with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council - was staged in the grounds of Cyfarthfa Castle with the park forming a natural amphitheatre leading down to the stage, erected on the shore of the park's lake.

The event at Merthyr featured regularly during the live Children in Need festivities on BBC One with presenters Frances Donovan and Jason Mohammad.
