Adrian Bailey

Date of birth

11 December 1945

Political profile

Adrian Bailey entered the Commons in a by-election in 2000, inheriting the seat vacated by outgoing Speaker Betty Boothroyd, which he held comfortably in 2001.

Before the election he suffered from jibes in the local press accusing him of lacking charisma - fuelled by his previous career as a librarian.

The attacks drew a spirited defence in the press from people who appreciated his work as deputy leader of Sandwell Council.

Since his election, he has proved to be an assiduous MP, if not an especially conspicuous one and specialises in constituency matters.

He was extremely critical of the low level of compensation offered to his constituent Lisa Potts, victim of a machete attack in a nursery class.
