Dari Taylor

Date of birth

13 December 1944

Political profile

The daughter of Dan Jones, former MP for Burnley, Dari Taylor was elected as MP for Stockton South in 1997.

She is a former lecturer and full time GMB official and was a long serving member of Sunderland Council.

She is a highly active member of the Commons and also has a high profile in her constituency.

After worrying that her surgeries were not accessible enough, she took to cold-calling on constituents.

She is reckoned to be on the mainstream left of the party, but while occasionally querying aspects of government policy, such as the reform of council structures, she has always voted loyally.

She has been a leading campaigner for an assembly for the North East and is also a keen contributor of defence issues.

This latter interest was recognised in 2001 when she became a joint parliamentary private secretary to the junior defence ministers.
