David Kidney

Date of birth

21 March 1955

Political profile

David Kidney took the former Tory stronghold of Stafford for Labour in 1997 and managed to hold it with an increased majority in 2001.

As an MP with a highly rural seat, he has occasionally voiced criticism of the government's policies on agriculture and fuel taxation.

Mr Kidney has also spearheaded a campaign against the system of funding local education, claiming that his constituency's schools are unfairly underfunded.

He served for a time as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the DEFRA ministerial team, but resigned in March 2003 over military action against Iraq.
