Political profile

Rachel Squire was first elected to the Commons in 1992.

She has become one of the most committed and successful constituency advocates in Parliament.

She has fought to secure regeneration funds for her seat, and has also helped to secure the future of a local coal mine.

Her seat is also home to Rosyth dockyard, and in the course of campaigning on its behalf she has acquired a considerable expertise on defence matters.

She is a constant contributor to defence debates, and an supporter of high levels of defence spending.

She served as a PPS to Education ministers Stephen Byers and Estelle Morris throughout the 1997 Parliament, but returned to the backbenches in 2001.

She has remained loyal to the government, and sits on the Defence select committee.
