Paul Tyler

Date of birth

29 October 1941

Political profile

When Paul Tyler was elected as MP for North Cornwall in 1992 his victory enabled him to make a belated continuation of one of the shortest parliamentary careers in history.

He had previously sat as member for Bodmin from February to October 1974, and had fought every election in between.

In the meantime he worked as a political consultant, and has a wide knowledge of the workings of the Commons - serving on a variety of the Commons' internal committees.

He was the Liberal Democrat chief whip from 1997 to 2001, and is currently the party's shadow Leader of the Commons.

With a highly rural constituency, he is also very interested in agricultural matters and in food supply - he is a champion of organic farming.

He is one of the least enthusiastic Liberal Democrat MPs for the EU, maintaining serious reservations about its agricultural policies.

He is also a supporter of the local tourist trade and, accordingly, maintains a strong interest in the quality of the local environment.
