Roger Williams

Date of birth

22 January 1948

Political profile

Roger Williams is a comparative rarity in Westminster - an MP with a farming background who does not sit for the Tories.

He has been a Liberal Democrat county councillor for many years and has notched up an impressive record of serving on public bodies, including a stint as chair of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

He has also been active in the NFU.

In inheriting his seat in 2001 from Richard Livsey, Mr Williams made great play of his local roots.

His political priorities arise from the rural nature of his seat, with farming and small business a particular interest.

He has also stressed a commitment to free care for the elderly and the abolition of tuition fees.
