Anne Begg

Date of birth

6 December 1955

Political profile

In 2001, Anne Begg became the first Labour MP ever to retain the seat of Aberdeen South, a feat which even the late Donald Dewar could not manage.

She claims that, besides her hard work for her constituents, she was helped by the high local profile which has ensued from her being the first MP to be permanently in a wheelchair.

She is a classic Blairite moderniser - pro-EU, pro-devolution and pro-PR and is well liked by the leadership who made her one of their recommendations for an MPs' place on Labour's National Executive Committee.

Nonetheless, she is not a mindless loyalist - she was one of the signatories to an EDM which expressed reservations about the proposed US Missile Defence system.
