Police investigate double drowning

Beach fishermen found a young woman's body

Police are investigating a double drowning after the bodies of a young couple were found on a beach in Wales.

The BBC's Wyre Davies: "The seas around Aberystwyth are notoriously rough"
Esther Spillane, 22, and Christopher Lewis, 27, disappeared after leaving a seafront hotel at Aberystwyth at 0030 BST last Wednesday, following a night out.

The body of Mr Lewis, of Aberystwyth, was found on the sands at Borth eight miles away on Friday.

Police launched a major air, sea and ground search for Miss Spillane, of County Cork, Ireland, who was a student at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

The search was called off on Saturday morning after a fisherman found a young women's body in the same area at Borth.

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police are now trying to piece together the background to the couple's disappearance.

It is thought they may have decided to take an early morning walk and swim on the beach at Borth.
