Doreen Lawrence insists Sir Paul Condon was wrong to support officers who had bungled the original murder investigation.

On Thursday Sir Paul is due to appear before the inquiry into Stephen's death.

He has already accepted that the police let the Lawrence's down and the police have suffered a big loss in public confidence as a result.

Speaking to BBC Two's current affairs programme Black Britain, Mrs Lawrence said: "Right from the word go he has defended his officers and at no time has he acknowledged what we were saying, that Stephen's murder was never investigated in the way that it should have been."

She says that the men who murdered her 18-year-old son in south London five years ago had ruined her life.

She says she feels no pity for them, only anger.

But she insists the five main suspects who appeared at the public inquiry in June should not be interviewed by the BBC's flagship current affairs series, Panorama.

What is the point, she asks, when they have repeatedly refused to answer questions about their guilt or innocence.

She said: "Why on earth should they have a platform?

"They have had umpteen opportunities, so why do they need a platform now and why should Panorama give it to them?"

Panorama said: "Any BBC interview with the five is a long way off. A decision on whether or not to go ahead will be taken in due course.

"It will be arrived at in the light of the views of all concerned, including the Lawrence family."

Mrs Lawrence says that the strain of the past five years means that she would like to drop out of the public eye, but the fact that her son's killers are still at large makes it difficult to do.
