Lloyd settles LTA feud

Lloyd says he will continue to back British tennis
Former British Davis Cup captain David Lloyd has settled his contract with the Lawn Tennis Association and dropped a veiled threat of legal action.

Lloyd was sacked by the association last month but was unhappy with suggestions that he undermined the team spirit and morale of Davis Cup players.

I have always had the interest of British tennis at heart

The LTA has now announced that the two parties have resolved their differences and will continue to work together in the future.

It is understood the agreement involves no financial settlement other than paying out the contracts of David Lloyd and his brother John, who worked as a coach.

"The LTA believes it can work with David Lloyd in the future to produce a new generation of tennis champions," said the association's chief executive John Crowther.

"We are looking forward to continuing with the discussions that began in November 1999 for LTA funding for his private initiative training scheme."

Roger Taylor is Lloyd's replacement
Lloyd had started the row by saying certain British players were turning up for Davis Cup matches not fit enough.

He has stood by the claim but after being sacked complained that it had not undermined morale.

"That is a direct slander on my character and future," he said. "I will not stand by and let people make incorrect accusations."

But as a settlement was announced the former coach expressed his desire to help restore British tennis to its former glories.

"I have always had the interest of British tennis at heart," said Lloyd.

"My reputation in the game, built up over almost 40 years, has been based on a deliberate and dynamic policy of encouragement and development of young sportsmen.

"I will continue to believe in this approach and will work wherever possible with the LTA to produce more top quality players."
