A leading figure in local government, the Ulster rugby coach and a former president of the Ulster Farmers Union are among 62 Northern Ireland people honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Lord Mayor of Belfast until 1 June this year, Councillor David Alderdice has been made an OBE for services to local government.

He has been a specialist registrar in Dermatology at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast and the City Hospital, and a Fellow at the Ulster Hospital.

He became an Alliance councillor on Belfast City Council in 1997 and is also education party spokesman for the Alliance Party.

Harry Williams, awarded an MBE for services to Rugby, is the coach of the Ulster side that won the European Cup in 1998.

During his long career in rugby he has played for Bangor, coached Bangor and coached the Ulster team.

In four years at Ulster during the 1980s the team won the Interprovincial Championship four times.

He also coached Bective Rangers and the Ireland A-side in Dublin. He was head of Holywood Primary School until June 1998, when he left to take up the full time post of Ulster Director of Rugby.

Walter Elliott, awarded the MBE for services to farming, was President of the Ulster Farmers Union for one year during a difficult period for Northern Ireland beef farmers - the BSE crisis.

A farmer himself in Aughnacloy, County Tyrone, and a Justice of the Peace, he has been a leading figure in agriculture for many years.

He is well known as a forward-thinking strategist in beef marketing and securing export orders, as director of the co-operative, Linden Meats.

Maeve Bell, awarded an OBE for services to consumers, has been honoured for her tenacity in campaigning for the rights of consumers and is a former director general of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland.

Awarded the CBE, were Tom Shaw, head of the Schools Inspectorate, George Henry Moore TD, Chairman of the Belfast City Hospital Trust, Margaret Elliot, and Anne Odling Smee, for services to education.

RUC officers awarded the QPM were Detective Superintendent James William Hamillton, Superintendent Eugene Kearney, a former head of RUC Traffic Branch, and Superintendent Wilfred Maurice Murphy.

Chris Hudson, from Dublin, was also awarded an MBE, for services to the Peace Train Organisation, which organises cross border, cross community trips.

Awards were also given to Shelah Wilson, of the Cancer Research Campaign, (MBE), Marjorie Keenan for services to people with learning disabilities (OBE), and Belfast Fire Brigade Station Officer, Kenneth Spence (QFSM).

Youth and victims workers were also honoured.
