The Oscars may be a fun night out for the beautiful people of Hollywood, but it is also a time for some of us to cringe as we listen to some of the speeches.

This year's ceremony was no exception - and it even included a silent tribute to the dead of the Titanic.

These are just some of the quotations from the film industry's most famous award night:

Best Actor Jack Nicholson thanks everyone for looking so good (1' 41")
"Oh my God! I just want to thank everybody I've ever met in my entire life, if anyone has a dream out there, just know that I'm living proof that they do come true."

Kim Basinger, Best Supporting Actress, LA Confidential.

"Ah, man! This might be the one time I'm speechless. Thank you Ben and Matt. I still want to see some ID. Thank you Gus Van Sant (director), you're so subtle you're almost subliminal."

Robin Williams, Best Supporting Actor. Good Will Hunting.

"The first time I saw Mrs Brown, and I saw it three times, I leaned over to my beloved and said: 'She's [Judi Dench] going to win an Academy Award.'

"And in my mind tonight, she has, and so has Julie Christie, and so has Helena Bonham-Carter and so has Kate Winslett, and I'm honoured to work in a year when there was so many magnificent performances.

"Jack, (Nicholson) I worship you and you know it."

Helen Hunt, Best Actress, As Good as it Gets.

"It's been amazing being part of the success of the Full Monty in the past year."

Anne Dudley, Best Original Comedy Score, The Full Monty.

"I have had this sinking feeling all night. I would like to thank everyone here tonight for looking so good."

Jack Nicholson, Best Actor, As Good as it Gets.

"I just said to Matt that losing would suck and winning would be really scary, and it's really, really scary.

"We are just two young guys who were fortunate enough to be involved with a lot of great people - there's no way we are doing this in 20 seconds."

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Best Original Screenplay, Good Will Hunting.

"In the midst of all this euphoria it's kind of hard to remember this is based on a real event where people died.

"I would like to have a few seconds silence in remembrance of the 1,500 men, women and children who died.

"The message of Titanic is if the great ship can sink, the unthinkable can happen, the future is unknowable, the only thing we truly own is today.

James Cameron asks for a few seconds silence (1' 07")
"I would like you to listen to the beating of your own heart which is the most precious thing in the world."

James Cameron, Best Picture, Titanic.
