Golden cyclist an 'inspiration'

Praise has been heaped on Scottish cyclist Chris Hoy after he won gold in the men's cycling team sprint at the Beijing Olympics.

Hoy, from Edinburgh, Scot anchored the three man squad to victory.

Scottish Deputy first minister Nicola Sturgeon said his success was an inspiration to everyone in Scotland.

Scottish Cycling chief executive Jackie Davidson said it was phenomenal.

Hoy has two more events at the games.

Ms Sturgeon said: "Congratulations to Chris Hoy for securing Scotland's second medal in Beijing in the men's Team Sprint.

"This is brilliant news for Chris, who continues to go from strength to strength in the sport.

"His success is an inspiration to everyone in Scotland and shows our athletes can compete at the highest level on the world stage."

Jackie Davidson added: "It's so exciting.

"It's just so phenomenal what the whole GB team has achieved and, to get a gold medal from Chris Hoy on the first day on the track, is just absolutely inspirational and we are looking forward to his next two events.

"I think, for Scottish cycling, the future is looking really healthy.

"Chris is such a great inspiration to all the young riders and his success at Olympic level just adds to that inspiration."
