Firefighters under bonfire attack
Bonfire Night was busy and violent
At least two firefighters have been injured after missiles and fireworks were thrown at them during a wave of attacks.
Strathclyde Fire Brigade said Tuesday's Bonfire Night proved to be one of the busiest in years. A spokesman for the Strathclyde brigade said the most disturbing aspect of this year's event was the amount of violence. Crews came under attack in East Kilbride, Coatbridge, Lanark, and Old Kilpatrick, and at least two firefighters were injured.
Damage was also caused to fire appliances. In one incident in Glasgow, a hydraulic platform had to be withdrawn from service after its windscreen was broken by a stone-throwing mob. Members of the public did not escape unhurt. In Motherwell, crews were called out to help a man who had been hit in the face with a firework And in Edinburgh a 13-year-old boy was taken to hospital after falling into a bonfire. Fireworks-related incidents Strathclyde brigade received more than 600 calls over a 12-hour period from Tuesday evening. In the Lothian and Borders area, fire operators received more than 270 calls up until to midnight. Most of the calls were for fireworks-related incidents. In Dundee, crews were kept busy throughout the evening. Tayside Fire Brigade received more than 170 calls across its area, including Perth. Grampian Fire Brigade attended to around 100 calls, many of which were small bonfires that had got out of control. Organised fireworks displays proved popular throughout Scotland, with a record 90,000 people turning out for the annual show at Glasgow Green.
