The reintroduction of services has been made possible by the decision by drivers to accept a three-year pay deal of 22% in return for improved productivity.

The train company said the return of services will be accompanied by a freeze on fares.

ScotRail also welcomed the addition of two new stations to the network with the opening of Edinburgh Crossrail.

Nick Brown said fares would not increase

ScotRail reduced its services by a quarter on 7 January after drivers held a series of one-day stoppages.

But from 2 June, the full Sunday service will resume along with most services running Monday to Saturday.

ScotRail acting managing director Nick Brown said: "We are pleased that the end of the dispute will enable us to reinstate the vast majority of services and to open Edinburgh Crossrail."

He added: "We froze fares in January - apart from putting 3% on single journeys - and have decided against taking the opportunity to raise any of them in June.

"I said that I would not pass the bill for drivers' salary increases on to the travelling public and I stand by that."

He said resumption of the rest of the normal timetable depended on clearing a backlog of driver training which had developed during the dispute.

Normal services between Glasgow and Edinburgh are also awaiting the completion of work to modify the company's Turbostar fleet of trains.

ScotRail added that the number of temporary speed restrictions across the Scottish network remained higher than before the Hatfield accident of October 2000.
