The residents, who are in their 60s, said they have have no idea who has been leaving the gifts or why.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said the "unsolicited gifts" were dropped off at the couple's home between 5 and 9 February.

A "substantial quantity" of clothing and food was delivered over the four-day period.

But the most surprising incidents occurred when £100 in notes was put through the letter box on three occasions.

The police spokesman said: "The couple themselves are amazed at the developments but have no idea why it is happening or who could be responsible.

'Found property'

"The woman does have connections with a charity shop but that is the only possible link.

"We are as baffled as are the householders, it's not every day that someone puts £300 through your letter box."

The police have appealed for help in solving the mystery.

The spokesman added: "As far as the property is concerned the money has been lodged as found property with local police and the clothing has been given to a charity shop.

"Unfortunately the food has had to be destroyed."
