Glasgow plans 'Octoberfest'
The Mayfest event folded five years ago
Glasgow is planning a new annual arts festival to fill the gap left by Mayfest.
The 10-day-long event, which is proposed for October, would feature music, theatre and comedy. Opera diva Lesley Garrett is already due to perform in Glasgow this autumn. And she would be one of the highlights of the city's new festival if it goes ahead. Talks are underway between Glasgow City Council and several leading players in the Scottish arts scene.
And it hopes to be able to announce full details by the spring. The festival would be the successor to Mayfest, which collapsed in debt five years ago when the council stopped its funding for the event. Mayfest was originally based around the traditional Mayday workers' holiday - but many said that it had lost its way in its final years. Arts journalist Siobhon Synnot said that Glasgow could support an arts festival - but that October would be the wrong time of year. "Arts festivals tend not to flourish in the cold, and we have already had the Edinburgh Festival," she said. "And there is a very good reason why most festivals in October usually involve beer rather than arts." |
