Exclusive: Saudis condemn Iraq war plan
Prince Saud al-Faisal and George Bush snr
The Saudis enjoyed good relations with Bush snr
In an exclusive interview with the World at One, the Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister insists that the fate of Iraq must be determined by Iraqis alone.

The Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, Prince Saud al-Faisal, tells World at One reporter Andrew North that concentrating on the removal of Saddam Hussein to the exclusion of all other issues is "unwise".

In a wide-ranging interview in Jeddah, he says those who believe they know the needs of the people of Iraq best are "gullible", insists that weapon inspections are the most important issue, and denies claims that his country is not doing enough in the war against terrorism.

Prince al-Faisal asserts that, as the US's closest Arab ally in the Middle East, it has blocked some $90m worth of terrorist funding for al-Qaeda.

Andrew reports on the growing rift between Saudi Arabia and the US, the country's economic problems now threatening its leading role in the Islamic world, and on life amongst British ex-pat enclaves in the Kingdom.
