Tony Blair talks to Newsnight

At the fifth anniversary of Labour's 1997 election victory, the Prime Minister gave Newsnight an unprecedented opportunity to test his ideas and policies.

Jeremy Paxman spoke to Tony Blair in three interviews shown on 14-16 May 2002.



Part three of the interview focused on how Mr Blair sees the relationship between the individual and the state in Britain under his government.


The second of three interviews focused on how Mr Blair sees Britain's role in the world.

The Prime Minister admitted a referendum on Britain's entry into the single European currency could be "getting close".


In the first interview, Jeremy Paxman questioned Tony Blair on how he hopes to deliver improvements in public services.

Newsnight's political editor Martha Kearney was joined by Michael White of the Guardian and Danny Finkelstein of the Times to discuss how Tony Blair performed.
