Is buying low cost social housing a good deal?
Prospects for housing association members look bleak
Over recent years thousands of people on modest incomes have bought homes through low cost shared-ownership schemes.
The deal allows would-be home owners to buy a share of a property, but they must also pay rent on the outstanding share to a housing association. Most tenants hope eventually to buy out the housing association and own the property in full. But with the value of the share set at market rates, it is increasingly expensive to do that. On Saturday 11 May 2002 Money Box looked at the issue.
