The BBC's Madrid correspondent, Steve Kingstone, examines the growing antagonism between Spain's Socialist government and the Roman Catholic Church.
The two parties' animosity has come to a head over changes to religious and social education in schools.
Many fear these could further dilute the Roman Catholic values that for many define Spain's national identity.
BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents was broadcast on Thursday, 4 November, 2008 at 1102 GMT. It was repeated on Monday, 8 December, 2008 at 2030 GMT.
