For over a century the midlands has been the spiritual heartland of car-making in the UK.

Today MG Rover, faces collapse after a rescue package for the Longbridge company fell through.

Six thousand jobs at the last British owned car maker could now be lost after the Government last night announced that the company had gone into administration.

However, there was some confusion about the announcement, with MG Rover's parent company saying they had not called in the receivers.
