Mary Poppins on stage
cast of the stage version of Mary Poppins
The show's budget is £8m
To make Mary Poppins controversial is quite an acheivement.

The film version of PL Travers' novel is saccharine sweet, with Julie Andrews in the title role - and Dick Van Dyke as the world's weirdest chimney sweep.

But the new stage version of Mary Poppins is billed as darker than the film - and unsuitable for children under seven.

The production, which has several new songs, has a running time of just under three hours and a budget of £8m.

  • Mary Poppins opens tomorrow night at the Prince Edward Theatre, London.
