Tackling the school run

One in five cars is on the school run
Breakfast's main story this morning is a new plan to tackle rush-hour congestion by reducing the school run.

It's estimated that one in five car journeys in the morning are made by parents taking children to school - usually trips of two miles or less.

Now the government's setting aside £50m over the next two years to finance initiatives which aim to get children out of the passenger seat and back on buses, cycles and shanks' pony.

    The government wants local education authorities to draw up travel plans so that children can safely walk, cycle or catch the bus to school.

    Primary schools will be able to apply for grants of up to £5,000 to improve facilities like bike sheds - or to lay on road safety training. Secondary schools can get up to £10,000.

    Other suggestions have included asking schools to stagger their hours - or providing special school buses to take children to school safely.
