E-mail of the week: weather chaos
We have forgotten how to drive in snow, says John
Have we forgotten what winter is like, down South? After the chaos caused by Thursday's snow, several viewers reckon we have a lot to learn - including truck driver John, from Washington, County Durham
I have been driving trucks [and cars] for 41 accident-free years. If drivers took more care in winter we would not see so many killed. As for salting roads, don't keep shouting about gritters not doing enough: they are working when you are sleeping. Years ago they did not put salt on roads, instead they put ash from household bins onto the ice and snow. We had heavier snow falls, I can recall having to drive to Edinburgh from Washington (120 miles each way) every morning at 5am. regardless of snow, ice, rain or wind, sometimes through 12/15 inches of snow. But we did not moan about it, we just got on with it and drove carefully.
It's not like that today when we get very little snow. The thing is now that people do not know how to drive, let alone drive on snow and ice.
