NI warning over heroin deaths
Dublin
Addicts in Dublin have died from mystery symptoms
The Department of Health has issued a warning about a "increased threat posed by heroin use" in Northern Ireland after a spate of deaths in Dublin and Glasgow.

Six heroin users have died from a mystery illness in Dublin over the last fortnight.

They died with the same symptoms as 12 addicts who have died in Glasgow.

The department said they were issuing the warning even though to date there was no evidence that contaminated heroin had been brought into Northern Ireland.

A spokesperson for the department said: "In recent weeks a number of people in both Glasgow and Dublin have died following the injecting of heroin.

"The cause of the deaths is currently under investigation and one theory being pursued is the possible contamination of either heroin or citric acid.

"The latter is used to dissolve heroin prior to use.

Needle exchange scheme

"The majority of cases that have so far come to our attention involve injecting into skin or muscle as opposed to veins.

"It is therefore very important that heroin users are aware of this increased risk. Of course, it must be recognised that all drug use carries risks."

The department said that health professionals, including those involved in the treatment of drug users, had been alerted to the potential threat.

Any concerned drug users should seek assistance from their doctor, or should contact their local accident and emergency department.

The Health Department added that it is currently discussing introducing pilot needle exchange schemes across Northern Ireland with the health boards.
