Boost in housing association homes

Associations are some of the main providers of rented housing

There has been a big increase in housing association homes in Northern Ireland according to a new report.

Housing Associations are some of the main providers of rented housing in the province.

The figures are contained in the Northern Ireland Housing Statistics report for 1998/99 which was published on Tuesday.

According to the report, a total of 1,862 dwelling were started, a 45% increase on the 1997/98 figure of 1,280.

Other key facts include:

  • There are 626,000 dwellings in Northern Ireland, an increase of 8,000 on the previous year (618,000);

  • Owner-occupied dwellings represented 71% (424,500) of total occupied stock (596,000). The remainder consisted of 130,500 (22%) rented from the NIHE, 26,000 (4%) privately rented/other and 15,000 (3%) rented from Housing Associations.

    Northern Ireland Housing Statistics is produced each year by the Central Statistics and Research Branch of the Department of the Environment (NI).

    The publication contains information on a variety of housing topics including, condition, planning applications, homelessness, new house sales and prices and waiting lists.
