Counterfeit goods seized at fair
The fair attracts thousands of people annually
The fair attracts thousands of people annually
Counterfeit goods valued at £300,000 have been seized by police and customs in County Antrim.

The goods seized were intended for sale at the Ould Lammas Fair in Ballycastle.

The haul included clothing, CDs, DVDs and videos.

Some of the fake goods were seized as traders got off boats in Belfast and the rest off stalls in the town.

The three-day operation was run by the Organised Crime Task Force.

On Sunday, police seized fake goods valued at £130,000 from a ferry in Belfast harbour.

Chief Inspector Tom Crawford said legitimate traders in Ballycastle would be glad such goods had been removed.

"From Saturday we have been running an operation at the ports to stop traders coming here with pirated copies, etc," he said.

'Complaining'

"Yesterday in Ballycastle alone, we seized £70,000 worth of pirated CDs, videos and play stations.

"During the last number of fairs there have been complaints, particularly from members of the public who have been basically ripped off by these people."

He said legitimate traders were losing out because of the practice.

"The local council and numerous other bodies have been complaining about the numbers of pirated copies of CDs."

The officer said Customs, Trading Standards and representatives of companies whose products had been counterfeited, were involved in the widespread operation.
