NI cancer centre 'to get go ahead'
Radiotherapy
Equipment will be provided by commercial companies
A new £57m cancer centre for Northern Ireland is expected to be given the go-ahead by the Stormont Executive on Thursday.

It is six years since it was decided a new centre was needed.

Four years ago, a decision was taken to build it at Belfast City Hospital.

However, it has taken until now to decide just how it is going to be paid for and when building work will start.

It is expected the cost of the centre will largely be met by the public purse, but that the equipment inside will be provided by commercial companies and leased back to the NHS.

However, the idea has been criticised by those who point out the arrangement will cost the NHS more in the long run as the public sector can borrow money at lower interest rates than private companies.

Despite the July holidays, it is hoped ground will be broken on the project by the end of next month and that the new centre will open to patients by December 2005.
