Rise in drink-driving figures
Campaign highlights dangers of drink driving
Campaign highlights dangers of drink driving
The number of drink-drivers detected by police in Northern Ireland over the Christmas period has increased.

Figures, released on Tuesday showed a total of 365 drink-drivers were detected during this year's anti-drink driving campaign.

Police said the figures, which represent a 12% increase on the same period last year, reflected the intensity of this year's anti-drink-driving campaign.

Police have screened more drivers since the campaign was launched in November, than in previous years.

The figure 2,337, is a rise of more than 630 on last year.

Superintendent Ian Hammil, Head of the Police Service's Road Policing Development branch, said the figures reflected the robust approach promised by police.

In addition to special traffic branch and local police operations, all drivers involved in accidents to which police were called, no matter how small, were breathalysed during the campaign.

A total of 62 drink-drivers were detected after such collisions.

With one in four of all road deaths in Northern Ireland put down to drink the police have warned there will be no let up in pressure on drink drivers.
