In pictures: US relief after Hurricane Dennis

Having already killed at least 20 people in the Caribbean, Hurricane Dennis made its way to the southern US.

It made landfall in Florida on Sunday, less than 80km (50 miles) east of where Hurricane Ivan hit last year.

Just before hitting Florida's panhandle area, Dennis weakened from a category four to a category three hurricane.

Winds gusting up to 161km/h (100 mph) took out trees and power lines - but have caused less damage than feared.

More than 1.4 million people had already fled to safety, while others headed for shelters.

Few cars were on the roads in Florida or Alabama as people battened down the hatches for the storm.

Heavy rains have left some residential areas flooded and turned many streets into rivers.

Dennis has weakened as it heads inland but forecasters warn of continuing winds, rain and possible tornadoes.
