US citizens have been quick to show their support for people in the UK in the wake of London's bomb attacks.
Many have e-mailed pictures and messages to the BBC to say their thoughts are with the British.
The business community showed its backing for London with a message on the Nasdaq board in New York's Times Square.
The union jack was raised outside the US State Department and then lowered to half mast as a mark of respect.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed a book of condolence at the British Embassy in Washington DC.
London's experience has struck a chord with a people still coming to terms with the 11 September 2001 attacks.
President George W Bush, in Scotland for the G8 summit, said the US would do all it could to bring the bombers to justice.
