The city of Edmonton came to a halt to honour four killed members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

City streets turned red as thousands of RCMP officers marched in their traditional scarlet tunics.

The hats of the dead men were carried to a memorial service attended by relatives, colleagues and political leaders.

The service, for Anthony Gordon, Leo Johnston, Brock Myrol and Peter Schiemann, was televised live across Canada.

Earlier in the week, colleagues buried Peter Schiemann who - along with the others - had served for less than four years.

The four constables were shot and killed on a farm north-west of Edmonton by a man who was also found dead.

Canada has been horrified by the worst loss of RCMP life since 1885, which has also led to questions and criticism.
