The US navy has despatched 12 helicopters to deliver aid to the devastated Indonesian province of Aceh.

Clean supplies of drinking water are what are most urgently needed.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inspected supplies at Banda Aceh airport before flying to the badly hit town of Meulaboh.

Trucks are also navigating Aceh's devastated infrastructure to deliver aid.

Those who have survived are trying to rescue what is left of their belongings.

The arriving supplies will help guard against illness which could threaten those who did survive the tsunami.
