In pictures: Iceland volcano erupts
1 of 6
A false colour image of the Grimsvotn volcano erupting on 2 November 2004, taken by the Terra Modis satellite.
2 of 6
The volcano has steadily released lava and ash into the air over the Vatnajokull glacier since Monday.
3 of 6
Explosions from the Grimsvotn volcano sent ash up to 12,000m (40,000 feet) in the air.
4 of 6
Luckily, the volcano is in an unpopulated area of Iceland so the eruption posed no threat to people or homes.
5 of 6
Ash from the eruption has been scattered over Norway and Finland and could reach Central Europe if winds change.
