The high-speed train was making its way from Turkey's biggest city Istanbul to the capital Ankara when it derailed.

People living close to the crash site in the north-western province of Sakarya rushed to offer their help.

The scene was described as "very chaotic" as a number of overturned carriages were checked for survivors.

Turkish officials said 36 people died - a sharp drop from initial estimates of 139, blamed on confusion in the crash aftermath.

The train had only recently been brought into service on the route.
