The British Museum opens an exhibition on 1 July revealing the secrets of mummies, using modern technology to see inside the ancient cases.

A medical CT scanner was used to take X-rays of the mummy Nesperennub, who lived around 800 BC.

Three X-rays were taken to reveal what was inside the sealed case - it is believed to be a man who died in his 40s.

Egyptologist Margaret Murray (1863-1963) led a team of scientists at the unwrapping of the mummy of the "Two brothers" at Manchester in 1908.

The exhibition has been aided by computer specialists Silicon Graphics, which has previously worked on The Mummy Returns blockbuster.

Mummies are rarely unravelled now so the 3D scans can advance research into the area. The exhibition runs until January 2005.
