The massive blast, believed to be caused by a car bomb, rocked the Australian embassy in central Jakarta at about 1000 local time.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene as the scale of the carnage became apparent.

At least nine people were killed and as many as 160 others injured.

Local security staff and passers-by are feared to be among the casualties.

Windows were blown out of the embassy and surrounding buildings.

There was also widespread damage to vehicles in the street.

Police put up a security cordon to seal off the area after the blast.

The militant Jemaah Islamiah group is suspected of being behind the attack.
